Crushed Stone Description

What is it?  Stone made at quarries and quarried from larger rock.

How is it made? Crushed stone is made by using a crushing machine.  This is why it is called crushed stone.   After it is crushed, it is put through different size screens.  3/4″ screen would produce 3/4″ crushed stone, 1 1/2″ screen would produce 1 1/2″ crushed stone, etc…  When crushed stone is being made, they always start screening with the smallest size crushed stone they want and work their way up.  This is how they minimize keeping the smaller crushed stone out of the larger crushed stone.

Is the size accurate? Crushed stone will vary in sizes from the fine stone dust screenings to the larger and heavier crushed stone.  Crushed stone screens have a square pattern to them.  If the crushed stone is smaller than the screen size in one direction then it will fit through the screen.  For example.  If 3/4″ crushed stone is being made and a piece of crushed stone is smaller than 3/4″ in any direction and that same piece is larger than 3/4″ in any direction, it will fit through the screen. Therefore it is common to see material larger than the screen size in the product.

How to choose the right size?  Some applications will require specific size crushed stone to be used.  Other applications are more personal preference.  If a general use of a product is listed under multiple products below, then it is either specific to design plans or based on personal preference.  When it comes to personal preference there are few factors that go into choosing the right crushed stone.  The look of the of the crushed stone, the use of the crushed stone and the work involved to spread and maintain the crushed stone.  Smaller crushed stone is easier to shovel and spread out, but is subject to being disturbed more easily.  As where larger crushed stone will be harder to shovel and spread out, but will not be disturbed as easily.  Disturbed crushed stone may need to be spread back out from time to time.

How much does crushed stone cost? Crushed stone pricing varies depending on the type of crushed stone, quantity desired and delivery distance.  You can get a free crushed stone estimate here, or take a look at our pricing tables for general crushed stone prices.
